Kilims ― daily used rugs in the villages of Afghanisthan

November 29, 2018 - March 16, 2019

Many caravans came and went on the Silk Road and diverse nomadic tribes moved expecting grassy plain. Since 1977, the director Iwatate Hiroko traveled Afghanistan for seven years continuously. In the bazaar, there were flat-woven kilims and a pile of carpets with natural color while dresses and clothes from Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and so-on. Under invasion by former Soviet Union, people’s hope for peace had gone though they had shown their own fabrics at bazaar when Iwatate visited there.

The display this time, many examples of Afghanistan kilims…flat-woven rugs, salt bags, tent bands, embroidered clothing and felt coats used as the necessities of the nomadic life. Since then these things have changed very much, on the other hand north Afghanistan far from the central area, people still feed sheep and weave kilims.
